This case report describes the surgical procedure for prepubic urethrostomy in the female dog, documented in a case in which it was used after resection of vaginal neoplasia. Prepubic urethrostomy is indicated as a salvage procedure in cases where there is not sufficient urethral length left to perform a perineal urethrostomy. This loss of urethral length can be due to extensive resection for oncologic surgery or to extensive tissue trauma. The main complication that can occur in this type of urethrostomy is urinary incontinence.

This case report describes ischemic neuromyopathy of the left hind limb as a postoperative complication after left-sided pneumonectomy for a squamous cell carcinoma of the left caudal lung lobe with secondary abscessation in a cat. We hypothesize about the possible causes of this postoperative complication and review the literature.

Tijdens de eerste twee weken van maart 2004 werden er 80 zwarte kraaien (Corvus corone) dood aangetroffen in eenpark in Brussel (België). Bij de lijkschouwing werden splenomegalie, hemorragische enteritis met duodenum letstels encerebrale of meningeale bloedingen waargenomen die deden denken aan West Nile virusinfectie. Met realtimePCR (real -time omgekeerde transcriptie polymerasekettingreactie) werd geen amplificatie van de West Nile virus specifieke3’UTR RNA-sequentie waargenomen terwijl ook de virusisolatie van gehomogeniseerde hersenen negatief was. Toxi -cologisch onderzoek toonde geen toxinen aan. Transmissie-elektronenmicroscopie toonde intracytoplasmatische, reo -virusachtige partikels aan in ultradunne secties van de milt en het duodenum. De vermeerdering van dit virus in culturenvan embryonaire hepatocyten van de kip werd bewezen op basis van hun cytopathogeen effect en hun aanwezigheid ingeïnfecteerde cellen en hun supernatans.

This paper describes the clinical symptoms and the macroscopic lesions associated with myocardial perforation in a bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps). Bacteriological examination of the myocard yielded a pure culture of Listeria monocytogenes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an L. monocytogenes infection associated with cardiac disease in reptiles.

This case report describes a clinical case of equine coital exanthema in a mare in Belgium. Several days following coitus, the mare showed typical lesions of coital exanthema consisting of papules, pustules and ulcers on the vaginal and vestibular region. The lesions healed within three weeks. The infection had no effect on fertility and gestation. The mare carried to term and delivered a healthy foal. Equine herpesvirus 3 was isolated from the lesions by means of virus isolation on an equine cell culture and subsequently identified by means of a PCR.

A case of Ebstein’s anomaly leading to right-sided heart failure in a one-year-old female Golden Retriever is reported. Clinical examination and investigations such as blood analysis, ECG, X-Ray, echocardiography and conservative therapy are described. Finally, the post mortem examination of the heart clearly showed the distal displacement of the malformed tricuspid valve leaflets, chordae tendinae and papillary muscles in the right ventricle, which is characteristic of Ebstein’s anomaly.

A two-month-old male non-diabetic Holstein Friesian calf with numerous decubital ulcers due to arthrogryposis and a history of inability to stand since birth was diagnosed with emphysematous cystitis. The diagnosis was based on the necropsy and the histopathological findings. No glucosuria was detected and Escherichia coli was isolated from the urine and blood. The contamination of the skin ulcers with E. coli and septicemia was probably the main underlying mechanism involved in the pathogenesis. The urinary bladder mucosa was affected with blebs of emphysema and petechiaes. Histopathologically, hemorrhage, emphysema and a few neutrophil leukocyte infiltrations were observed in the mucosa of the urinary bladder. Although emphysematous cystitis is commonly associated with glucosuria, especially in dogs, this report indicates that it can equally occur as a complication of septicemia in calves.

A case of verrucous endocarditis of the mitral valve was diagnosed in a domestic tomcat. The animal appeared to have died of cardiac failure and/or septicemic shock as septic emboli were present in multiple organs such as the liver and kidneys. The mitral valve was covered with multiple yellow/grey cauliflower-like nodules. Culture of these nodules revealed Pasteurella multocida after isolation and identification.

A ten-day-old Arabian filly was examined because of signs of weakness, respiratory distress and cyanosis. On auscultation a grade V/VI holosystolic murmur was found on both sides of the thorax. The point of maximal intensity was at the right cranial part of the thorax. On the basis of clinical and echocardiographic examination, a differential diagnosis of truncus arteriosus, pseudotruncus arteriosus, tetralogy of Fallot or aorticopulmonary septal defect was made. Despite the poor prognosis, the owner refused euthanasia. The condition of the foal deteriorated progressively and the foal died at two months of age. Necropsy demonstrated a persistent truncus arteriosus. This paper also describes the characteristic echocardiographic differences which can be observed between a normal heart and a heart with a truncus arteriosus.

A 3-year-old neutered male domestic cat was presented with anorexia and weight loss. Clinical examination also revealed fever and pale mucosae. The blood smear showed an abnormal presence of both erythrocytic and leukocytic precursors in the circulation. The cat also tested positive for feline leukemia virus (FeLV). Due to the poor prognosis, the cat was euthanized and presented for autopsy. Bone marrow smears also revealed the presence of immature erythrocytic and leukocytic cells. This findings corresponded well with erythroleukemia, an uncommon form of leukemia.
