SURGICAL TREATMENT OF A SYNOVIAL HERNIA OF THE TIBIOTARSAL JOINT IN A HORSE

Samenvatting:
This case report describes the treatment of a large hernia of the tibiotarsal joint in a horse. A fluctuant swelling on the lateral aspect of the tarsus had suddenly appeared and it gradually increased to reach a diameter of 12 cm and a thickness of 6 cm. There was pronounced synovial effusion of the tibiotarsal joint, but none of the swellings was painful. The horse was not lame. During a diagnostic arthroscopy, an opening of 1 by 2.5 cm could be detected on the lateral aspect of the joint capsule. Surgical correction with resection of the hernial sac and closure of the defect in the fibrous joint capsule were performed. In the postsurgical period, the effusion of the joint and swelling of the periarticular structures gradually diminished resulting in a clinically normal tarsus. Synovial hernias are relatively uncommon in the horse and have not been described in this location. They should mainly be differentiated from a joint ganglion, a haematoma and an acquired bursitis at the level of the joint. This case report illustrates that, even for very large joint hernias, the prognosis after surgical correction is good.

PRIMARY SPLENIC TORSION IN THE DOG: CASE REPORT AND LITERATURE REVIEW
Auteur(s):
I. Putcuyps, S. Schoofs, K. Feyten, T. Maenhout
Samenvatting:
This paper describes a case of chronic primary splenic torsion in a female Great Dane. Clinical signs had already been present for two weeks. A diagnosis was obtained by radiography and ultrasound. A successful splenectomy was performed and resulted in complete recovery of the animal. A literature review is given of primary splenic torsion in the dog, including a discussion of the different manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment are the key to a good prognosis.

CONTROL OF HELMINTH DISEASES ON DAIRY CATTLE FARMS IN FLANDERS/ RESULTS OF A QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY
Auteur(s):
E. Claerebout, J. Agneessens, D. Demeulenaere, J. Vercruysse
Samenvatting:
In 1998 a questionnaire was sent to 2280 dairy cattle farmers in Flanders, Belgium, to investigate whether the pasture management included measures to control gastrointestinal nematodes, whether chemoprophylaxis was applied and whether chemoprophylaxis and grazing management were integrated, rather than superimposed. Information was also gathered on the control measures against lungworm and liver fluke. On 82% of the farms, the grazing management included preventive measures against gastrointestinal nematodes, such as rotational grazing (21.8%), grazing on aftermath (57.0%), or late turnout (26.1%). Nevertheless, the calves received preventive anthelmintic treatment on 69.9% of the farms. At least on 18.3% of the farms preventive pasture management was combined with intensive chemoprophylaxis, which may be ‘overprotective’. On the other hand, on 7.4% of the farms no protective measures against gastrointestinal nematodes were taken. Only 15.1% of the farmers vaccinated their calves against Dictyocaulus. Cattle were treated against liver fluke on 12.1% of the farms.

ISOLATION OF ESCHERICHIA COLI O157 FROM ZOO ANIMALS
Auteur(s):
L. Bauwens, W. De Meurichy, F. Vercammen
Samenvatting:
During a nine month survey in the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp, E. coli O157 was isolated from six out of 300 faecal samples collected from 258 mammals, 33 birds and nine reptiles. Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli O157/H7 (EHEC) strains were isolated from a horse (Equus caballus) and two primates: a ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) and a goeldi’s monkey (Callimico goeldii). Atypical E. coli O157 strains, which fermented sorbitol and were β-glucuronidase positive, were isolated from two silvered leaf monkeys (Presbytis cristatus) and a ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta). These strains were classified as enteropathogenic (EPEC), as they only possessed the eaeA gene as a virulence marker. With five isolations out of 48 samples, the primates can be considered a potential source of infection by E. coli O157.
