Bilaterale osteochondritis dissecans van de laterale taluskam bij een jonge rottweiler
Auteur(s):

A thymic lymphoma in a Heifer
Auteur(s):
S. De Vliegher, G. Opsomer, G. Hoflack, H. De Bosschere, P. Deprez, A. de Kruif
Samenvatting:
This case report describes a Red Holstein heifer with a thymic lymphoma (lymphosarcoma; malignant lymphoma). The heifer was presented because of a severe swelling at the throat and ventral neck region. Based on the clinical examination the diagnosis of thymic neoplasia was made. Because of the poor prognosis the heifer was euthanised and autopsied. Histopathological examination revealed a thymic lymphoma.

Equine herpesvirus type 1 abortion, neonatal foal death and nervous system disorders diagnosed in Belgium in 1999
Auteur(s):
K.M. van der Meulen, H.J. Nauwynck, M.B. Pensaert
Samenvatting:
A description is made of the diagnosis of cases of abortion, neonatal foal death and nervous system disorders caused by equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) in 1999, carried out in the Laboratory of Virology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Merelbeke, Belgium. Twenty-eight cases originated from Flanders, two from Wallonia and one from the Netherlands. There were 22 abortions, four neonatal foal deaths and five cases of nervous system disorders. The diagnosis was made by means of virus isolation. Twenty-nine percent of the horses involved had been vaccinated against EHV-1.

SURGICAL TREATMENT OF A SYNOVIAL HERNIA OF THE TIBIOTARSAL JOINT IN A HORSE
Auteur(s):
A. Martens, M. Steenhaut, L. Vlaminck, F. Pille, K. Sercu, A. De Moor
Samenvatting:
This case report describes the treatment of a large hernia of the tibiotarsal joint in a horse. A fluctuant swelling on the lateral aspect of the tarsus had suddenly appeared and it gradually increased to reach a diameter of 12 cm and a thickness of 6 cm. There was pronounced synovial effusion of the tibiotarsal joint, but none of the swellings was painful. The horse was not lame. During a diagnostic arthroscopy, an opening of 1 by 2.5 cm could be detected on the lateral aspect of the joint capsule. Surgical correction with resection of the hernial sac and closure of the defect in the fibrous joint capsule were performed. In the postsurgical period, the effusion of the joint and swelling of the periarticular structures gradually diminished resulting in a clinically normal tarsus. Synovial hernias are relatively uncommon in the horse and have not been described in this location. They should mainly be differentiated from a joint ganglion, a haematoma and an acquired bursitis at the level of the joint. This case report illustrates that, even for very large joint hernias, the prognosis after surgical correction is good.

PRIMARY SPLENIC TORSION IN THE DOG: CASE REPORT AND LITERATURE REVIEW
Auteur(s):
I. Putcuyps, S. Schoofs, K. Feyten, T. Maenhout
Samenvatting:
This paper describes a case of chronic primary splenic torsion in a female Great Dane. Clinical signs had already been present for two weeks. A diagnosis was obtained by radiography and ultrasound. A successful splenectomy was performed and resulted in complete recovery of the animal. A literature review is given of primary splenic torsion in the dog, including a discussion of the different manifestations, diagnosis, and treatment. Early diagnosis and treatment are the key to a good prognosis.

Plasmodium-associated mortality in trushes
Auteur(s):
P. Tavernier, R. Ducatelle, M. Vereecken, P. De Herdt
Samenvatting:
Since a few years acute mortality in late summer has been observed in trushes (Turdinae) kept in aviaries by bird ringers. Only fieldfares and redwings are affected. Swelling and darkening of spleens and livers are the most conspicious lesions. Sexual and asexual stadia of Plasmodium were detected cytologically in blood smears. Schizonts were found in impression smears of liver, spleen, and kidney. Incidence and pathogenesis of haematozoal infections in trushes are reviewed and compared with our findings.

Salmonellosis in adult cattle in Belgium
Auteur(s):
F. Pasmans, P. Deprez, L.A. Devriese, H. Imberechts, C. Godard, F. Haesebrouck
Samenvatting:
In the summer and fall of 1999 and in May 2000, ten outbreaks of salmonellosis were diagnosed in adult beef and dairy cows in Belgium. The main clinical sign was severe, often fatal diarrhoea. Catarrhal or haemorrhagic enteritis was the main necropsy finding. Infected cows excreted large numbers of Salmonella serotype Typhimurium. Six out of seven lysotyped Typhimurium strains belonged to lysotype DT104. In contrast with the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, this type of salmonellosis in adult cattle has not been reported in Belgium before.

APOPTOTIC NEURONS IN A CAT WITH CEREBELLAR ABIOTROPHY
Auteur(s):
H. De Bosschere, M. Bos, R. Ducatelle
Samenvatting:
Cerebellar abiotrophy is defined as a premature spontaneous progressive loss of neurons. In an 11-months-old cat with cerebellar abiotrophy, clinical symptoms developed progressively after castration. Histologically a loss of Purkinje cells, granular layer cells and demyelination of white matter were observed. Apoptotic neurons were found using the TUNEL technique. In this case the cerebellar abiotrophy was due to apoptosis of neuronal populations. An episode of anoxia/hypoxia of the nervous system during anesthesia may have played a role in the induction of cerebellar apoptosis.

THE “POST-WEANING MULTISYSTEMIC WASTING SYNDROME” IN BELGIUM
Auteur(s):
P. Vyt, G. Labarque, M. Bos, H. Nauwynck, S. Roels, C. Miry, M. Pensaert, R. Ducatelle
Samenvatting:
At the end of 1999 symptoms resembling the “postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome” (PMWS) were mentioned in the field. This article describes three cases in which the clinical symptoms could be confirmed by histopathology. In two cases electron microscopic examination revealed the presence of small aggregates of virus-like particles that were circular and had a diameter of 14 to 17 nm. In the third case, virologic examination demonstrated the presence of porcine circovirus (PCV) type 2. The clinical and (histo)pathological findings and the discussion about this syndrome and its etiology are briefly described to focus the attention of the practitioner.
